This free Gantt chart generator turns a task list into a professional, ready-to-submit project timeline. Type tasks with owners, start dates and durations in working or calendar days, link them with predecessors (finish-to-start, start-to-start or finish-to-finish with lag, e.g. 3FS+2), group them into phases with automatic WBS numbers, and mark milestones. The schedule recalculates as you type, skipping weekends and the holidays you list, and highlights the critical path, float, progress, late tasks and today’s date on a live chart. Download an Excel workbook with live formulas (WORKDAY, NETWORKDAYS, SUMPRODUCT and formula-driven timeline bars) that keeps recalculating in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice, or a print-ready PDF, PNG, SVG, Word, CSV, Microsoft Project XML or JSON file.

  1. Pick a ready-made template (software, construction, marketing, event or thesis) or start blank
  2. Enter the project name, manager, project start, status date and whether durations count working days or calendar days; tick weekend days and list holidays
  3. Type each task’s name, owner, start date and duration (or end date), and indent tasks to put them inside a phase
  4. Link tasks in the Predecessors column using row numbers such as 3, 3FS+2, 4SS or 5FF
  5. Update % done as work progresses and watch the live chart, critical path and late count
  6. Download Excel with live formulas, PDF (A4, Letter or A3), PNG, SVG, Word, CSV or Microsoft Project XML

  • Use Working days so durations skip weekends and holidays — the Excel file uses the same WORKDAY and NETWORKDAYS rules, so dates match.
  • Critical-path bars are red (violet when your company colour is red): any delay there moves the finish date.
  • Save JSON to keep an editable copy of your plan and reopen it later — nothing is stored on a server.
  • For printing big plans choose A3, or the PDF layout that splits the timeline across pages at a readable scale.
  • Dates use whole days (no hours). Dependencies are finish-to-start, start-to-start or finish-to-finish; links on phase rows are ignored. In the Excel file, critical path and float are calculated by DocSample and written as values (re-export after big changes), and the timeline has a fixed number of columns. PDF text uses a standard font, so non-Latin characters such as Devanagari print as “?”.

What is a Gantt chart?

A Gantt chart is a bar chart of a project schedule: each task is a horizontal bar from its start to its end date on a timeline, so you can see the order of work, overlaps, dependencies, milestones and progress at a glance.

Does the Excel download really contain formulas?

Yes. End dates use WORKDAY (or WORKDAY.INTL for custom weekends) with a Holidays named range, linked tasks start with MAX of their predecessors’ WORKDAY results, phases use MIN/MAX, progress uses SUMPRODUCT weighted by duration, and the coloured bars are conditional-formatting formulas. Change a duration in Excel and the dates, status and bars update.

Can I open it in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets (or File → Import). WORKDAY, NETWORKDAYS, SUMPRODUCT and the conditional formatting are supported.

How is the critical path calculated?

With the critical path method: a forward pass finds the earliest start and finish of every task from its dependencies, a backward pass from the project finish finds the latest dates, and tasks with zero total float are critical.

Can I import it into Microsoft Project?

Yes — download MS Project XML and open it in Microsoft Project or ProjectLibre. Tasks, outline levels, durations, dependencies with lag, % complete, owners and holidays are included.

Is it free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the whole chart is calculated and exported in your browser — your plan is only saved in this browser’s storage unless you download it.

Input: Tasks typed in browser or a saved JSON file  ·  Output: Excel (.xlsx) with formulas, PDF, PNG, SVG, Word (.docx), CSV, MS Project XML, JSON
