Online Document Editor – Free Word & DOCX Editor

Write and edit Word (DOCX) documents online — pages, styles, comments, PDF · 100% client-side, fast & private

Processed locally in your browser — documents are saved only on this device. Back to the editor ↑

This free online document editor is a full word processor that runs in your browser. Type on real pages (A4, Letter or Legal, portrait or landscape) with margins, headers, footers and page numbers; format text with fonts, sizes, colours and highlights; use paragraph styles like Title and Heading 1–6, lists and checklists, tables with merged and shaded cells, images you can resize, links, a table of contents and page breaks. Review with comments and replies, a suggesting mode that tracks insertions and deletions, and version history. Open existing .docx, .odt, Markdown, HTML or text files and download your work as Word DOCX, PDF with selectable text, ODT, HTML, Markdown or TXT. Your documents are saved automatically in this browser — nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

A free word processor online with real pages

Most online editors show one long scrolling sheet. This one lays your text out on real pages — A4, US Letter, Legal and more, in portrait or landscape — with margins you can drag on the ruler, page breaks, headers and footers with page numbers, and a different first page for covers. What you see is what prints: the PDF is generated from the same layout. Prefer an endless canvas? Switch to pageless view in one click.

Edit DOCX online and keep the formatting

Open a Word document and keep working: headings and paragraph styles, fonts and colours, bulleted, numbered and multilevel lists, tables with merged cells and shading, pictures, hyperlinks, comments, tracked changes, headers, footers, page size and margins are carried over. Download it again as a .docx with real Word styles, numbering, tables, images and page-number fields, or as an ODT file for LibreOffice.

Write documents online with templates, comments and version history

Start from a resume, cover letter, formal letter, report with a table of contents, meeting notes with action items, invoice, essay or project proposal. Review your work with comments and replies, switch to suggesting mode to track edits and accept or reject them later, and restore any earlier version from the history. Find and replace (with regular expressions), word count, special characters and emoji, dark mode and a distraction-free focus mode are all built in.

  1. Start typing on the blank page, pick a template (resume, letter, report, invoice, essay…) or open a .docx file
  2. Format with the ribbon: fonts, styles, lists, alignment, spacing, tables, images, links and page setup
  3. Add headers, footers and page numbers; insert a table of contents from your headings
  4. Use comments, suggesting mode and version history to review your work
  5. Download as Word DOCX or PDF (or ODT, HTML, Markdown, TXT) — the document is also kept in this browser

  • Use Heading 1–3 styles for section titles — the outline, the table of contents and the Word export all use them.
  • Press Ctrl+/ to see every keyboard shortcut; most Word and Docs shortcuts work.
  • Collapse the ribbon (^ button) for a single, Docs-style toolbar and more room to write.
  • Download a DOCX or a JSON backup of important documents — clearing your browser data deletes the local copy.
  • There is no real-time co-editing: documents live only in this browser, so share the DOCX to collaborate. Office fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Cambria, Courier New) are shown with metric-compatible open fonts, so line breaks match closely but may differ slightly in Word. Complex Word features such as text boxes, floating shapes, equations, footnotes, columns, SmartArt and macros are not editable — text inside them is kept where possible. Suggesting mode tracks inserted and deleted text, not formatting changes. Old .doc files and PDFs must be converted to .docx first.

Is this online document editor really free?

Yes. Every feature — templates, DOCX and PDF export, comments, suggesting mode and version history — is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The PDF can include a very faint “Made with DocSample.com” note, which you can switch off.

Can I edit a Word document online without Microsoft Word?

Yes. Open a .docx file and it is converted in your browser into an editable document with its headings, styles, fonts, lists, tables, images, page size, margins, headers, footers and comments. When you are done, download it again as a .docx that opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages.

Is it a Google Docs alternative?

For writing and editing on your own, yes: it has a paged layout, a ribbon and menus, comments, suggesting mode, version history, find and replace and word count. The difference is privacy — your documents never leave your device — and the trade-off is that there is no real-time collaboration. Share the DOCX file instead.

Are my documents uploaded or stored online?

No. The editor runs entirely in your browser. Documents and versions are saved in this browser's own storage (IndexedDB) on your device. We never receive the content.

Will the PDF look exactly like the editor?

Yes. The PDF is drawn from the same page layout you see, with the fonts embedded and the text selectable and searchable. The DOCX uses Word's own styles and page settings; Word may break a line differently if it substitutes a font.

Does it support Nepali and other languages?

Yes. Type in any language your keyboard supports. Nepali (Devanagari) uses the Mukta font, which is shaped correctly on screen and in exports. Spell check uses your browser's dictionaries.

Can I install DocSample Docs as an app and use it offline?

Yes. Click Install app in the editor’s top bar (Chrome or Edge on Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS and Android). On iPhone or iPad open the page in Safari, tap Share and choose Add to Home Screen; on a Mac with Safari choose File → Add to Dock. The installed DocSample Docs app opens in its own window, can open .docx, .odt, .md and .txt files, and keeps working without internet — writing, opening files and DOCX/PDF downloads all run on your device, and your documents are saved in this browser.

Input: Typing in the browser, or an existing .docx, .odt, .md, .html or .txt file  ·  Output: Word DOCX, PDF (selectable text, embedded fonts), ODT, HTML, Markdown, TXT, JSON backup
